Five Palestinians killed from Israeli army gunfire near Jericho

Five Palestinians dawn Monday were shot dead by the Israeli military in Aqabat Jabr refugee camp, adjacent to the occupied West Bank city of Jericho, according to medical sources.

A sizable Israeli force barged its way into the refugee camp, triggering confrontations.

The heavily-armed soldiers opened fire towards local young men, killing five.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said that its medics provided treatment to three live gunfire injuries, including one seriously injured, and three suffocation cases.

PRCS added that the soldiers obstructed the work of its medics and attacked one of its ambulances while trying to prevent it from entering the refugee camp.

The soldiers also ransacked several houses in the refugee camp, and detained a few Palestinians.

Last night, undercover soldiers rounded up two brothers from a coffee shop at the main entrance of the refugee camp.

No injuries were reported among Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli army has tightened security measures around Jericho in recent days in hunt for a Palestinian accused of carrying out a shooting attack against an Israeli restaurant.

Tension mounted across the Palestinian territories following an Israeli military incursion in the West Bank city of Jenin last week that left 10 Palestinians dead. Seven Israelis were also killed in a shooting attack in occupied East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian health ministry said three people had been wounded, one critically but it gave no details on any dead.
