Newspapers review: Renewed tensions over Al-Aqsa mosque focus of dailies

Renewed tensions between Israeli police and Islamic Endowment (Waqf) Department over East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Israeli occupation authorities labeling the Islamic Endowment (Waqf) Department as a “terrorist organization”.

Al-Ayyam said in this regard Muslim religious institutions in Jerusalem deplored Israeli occupation authorities’ decision to extend the closure of Bab al-Rahma entrance to al-Aqsa Mosque until further notice.

Al-Quds added Muslim religious institutions, including Council of Waqf and Religious Affairs, rejected Israeli police’s decision to try the Islamic Waqf Department in Israeli courts.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a local committee’s call for Jerusalemite Palestinians to perform Friday noon prayer in front of the Shamasna family’s home in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Al-Quds also reported former Israeli attorney-general Michael Ben-Yair stating that as long as ]Israeli[ Jews seized the homes of Palestinians who were forcefully displaced from West Jerusalem during the Nakba in 1948, they were no longer entitled to the homes they left behind in East Jerusalem.

On the other hand, al-Ayyam said Israeli occupation authorities plan to construct an industrial zone in the Israeli settlement of Beit El near the central West Bank city of al-Bireh.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli occupation authorities plan to transfer government powers to World Zionist Organization’s Settlement Division.

The dailies covered statements of the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer during his visit to the besieged Gaza Strip.

Maurer was reported describing the humanitarian situation as “dire” and warning of a “crisis of hope” in the besieged enclave.

Al-Quds reported the cabinet slamming Israeli military’s decision to establish a new municipal service administration for Israeli Jewish settlers who live illegally in Hebron as a violation of international laws.

It also reported Israel was concerned over the steps and positions that would be announced by President Mahmoud Abbas during the UN General Assembly later this month.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli military decided to release the body of slain Palestinian Raed al-Salhi to his family in Bethlehem-district refugee camp of Duheisha.

Al-Salhi, 21, succumbed to his critical injuries in an Israeli hospital weeks after he was shot by Israeli forces in a predawn raid into the camp on August 9.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli military also decided to release the body of Qutaiba Zahran to his family in Tulkarem-district town of Illar.

Zahran, 17, was shot dead by Israeli forces after he allegedly attempted to stab soldiers at Zatara checkpoint on August 18.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces detained 25 Palestinians, including several children, during extensive predawn raids across the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a total of 24 Palestinians were detained.

Al-Ayyam added Israeli undercover forces, known as Mustaarabin in Arabic, detained a Palestinian during a raid into al-Jalazoun refugee camp in the central West Bank district of Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu froze a plan to allow the construction of thousands of Palestinian homes and license thousands others in the northern West Bank district of Qalqiliya.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Deputy Head of Fatah Movement Mahmoud al-Aloul stating Netanyahu was investing the dominant climate to establish more facts on the ground.
