Newspapers Review: Groundwork for new Israeli settlement focus of dailies

Laying the groundwork for a new Israeli settlement on Palestinian land belonging to the village of Jaloud, south of the West Bank city of Nablus, dominated the Tuesday front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported Jewish settlers started construction work on two settlement outposts, one near Jaloud in the West Bank, and the other in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Ayyam reported settlers set up a number of mobile homes and tents on Jaloud land following an Israeli government approval of about $17 million for a new settlement to be built just few meters away from where the outpost is being set up.

The new settlement of Amichai is expected to house settlers evacuated from the Amona outpost that was demolished by an Israeli court order in February because it was built on private Palestinian land. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised then to build a new illegal settlement for the evacuated Jewish settlers.

The dailies reported the Palestinian government slamming the rise in Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem as intended to “displace Palestinians” and “undermine any chance for reviving the peace process.”

Al-Quds said Israeli forces shot and injured two Palestinians, including a girl purportedly after she attempted to stab soldiers near Ramallah-district town of Nilin.

Al-Ayyam added Israeli forces injured a Palestinian young man and detained another during a predawn raid into Beit Rima village, northwest of Ramallah.

It added forces shut down the main entrance leading to the cluster of Palestinian villages of Bani Zaid, northwest of Ramallah.

Al-Quds also reported Raed Salhi succumbed to his wounds weeks after he was shot by Israeli forces in a raid into Dheisheh refugee camp in the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Salhi, 22, a resident of the camp died in an Israeli hospital. He was shot by five bullets in the chest at close range during a predawn raid on August 9.

Al-Ayyam said the wife of jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti was banned by Israeli occupation authorities from visiting her husband until 2019.

The dailies also highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire in Ramallah.

Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reiterating his commitment to peace on the basis of the two-state solution.

Le Maire was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida describing the meeting as “fruitful” and pledging to continue to provide support to the Palestinian government.

Al-Ayyam added Israeli occupation authorities delivered eviction notices for six Palestinian families during a raid into East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

It also spotlighted a letter that was sent by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which it said “demolishing Palestinian communities constitutes a war crime for which you would bear personal liability.”
