July: Examples of inflammatory comments by Israeli officials

PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi:
“The real incitement stems from Israel’s military occupation of Palestine and its enslavement of an entire nation. The Israeli hardline extremist government led by Benjamin Netanyahu is responsible for generating a culture of hate and racism in Israel, inciting violence and feeding extremism. Updated regularly, this report includes samples of recent derogatory and inflammatory comments and incitement by Israeli government officials specifically meant to distort reality and mislead public opinion.”
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman: “I don’t know what a [settlement] freeze is, take the data and go over it. Only this year we approved 8,500 [settlement] housing units in the first half. What freeze are you talking about? Look at the facts.” (July 12, 2017)

Transportation and Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz: “The Temple Mount is in our hands. We will not cede sovereignty. The State of Israel is responsible for preserving law and order on the Temple Mount.” (July 21, 2017)

Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Galant: “The State of Israel has a moral and practical obligation to strengthen Jewish settlement in the area and to double the number of residents from the number of people who lived here before the fall of the bloc in 1948. Gush Etzion and Efrat are the southern wing of Greater Jerusalem.” (July 26, 2017)

“We will be everywhere that it is possible to build [settlements] and to provide solutions to the housing shortage, particularly, as in the case of Adam, in the vicinity of Jerusalem. In greater Jerusalem, there is also particular security importance in Israeli [territorial] contiguity from the Gush Etzion Bloc in the south to Atarot in the north, and from Ma’aleh Adumim in the east to Givat Ze’ev in the west.” (July 20, 2017)

Regional Cooperation Minister Tzai Hanegbi: “My message to the Palestinians in an interview with Channel 2 and other media outlets following the cruel murder in the settlement of Halamish: This is how a ‘Nakba’ begins. Just like this. Remember ’48. Remember ’67. It begins with zealot religious leaders whom Allah promised the whole world. It continues with radical, reckless leaders for whom the spilling of blood, even if it is your blood, fits their own short-term interests. And it permeates the religiously ignorant masses who only yearn to become “martyrs.” Remember ’48. Remember ’67. When you want to stop it all it will already be gone. It will already be after the third “Nakba.” After the disaster. After the tragedy. You’ve already paid that crazy price twice for your leaders. Don’t try us again because the result won’t be any different. You’ve been warned!” (July 22, 2017)

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely: “Our settlement in the places of our forefathers is legal.” (July 25, 2017)

“You [Palestinians] are thieves of history. Your history books are empty, and you are trying to co-opt Jewish history and Islamicize it.” (July 12, 2017)

“David, Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah are the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish nation. You [Palestinians] will not succeed in Islamicizing them, you will not succeed in eradicating the bible. You will not succeed in uprooting us from our land and our sovereignty. We will be here forever.” (July 12, 2017)

Knesset Member Oren Hazan (Likud): “It’s time to expel the families of terrorists. I’d like to say the truth without sounding, God forbid, too extreme. But if it were up to me, I’d enter the terrorist’s home last night, take him and his family with him and execute them all. Yes just like that. With no shame. A quick and simple execution. Only like this, we will regain security. Only like this, they will understand that we’re not playing around here.” (July 22, 2017)

“They [Palestinians] are the ones who run away like dogs with their tail between their legs. Without insulting any dogs, God forbid. Yes, even dogs are better than these vile human animals.” (July 22, 2017)

Knesset Member Bezalel Smotrich (Jewish Home): “I would set up a Synagogue on the Temple Mount today, this morning. If someone thinks that through terrorism, violence, and the massacre of a family he will push our sovereignty back, then – if I am the Prime Minister – this morning I would close the Temple Mount to Arab prayer and establish a Synagogue for Jews. And if the terrorism continues I would close the mount to Arabs and there will be only Jews there.” (July 24, 2017)

“[Settlement] construction should continue. We should be systematic in our approach to this well-known matter. Sovereignty must be applied and hundreds of thousands of Jews should be brought to Judea and Samaria [Occupied West Bank] to demonstrate that a Palestinian state will not arise and destroy the hope that drives terrorism.” (July 24, 2017)

Knesset Member Moti Yogev (Jewish Home): “We need to close the Temple Mount to Muslims for an extended period of time, and to tighten our security and diplomatic control of it.” (July 14, 2017)

Knesset Member Shuli Moalem-Refaeli (Jewish Home): “In accordance with past experience, and in light of the current coalition makeup, it is incumbent on us to protect Jerusalem from future possible processes. Even if there is no threat to a united Jerusalem in the foreseeable future, past experience has shown that there can be surprises… This law [“Basic Law: Jerusalem, the Capital of Israel”] has a clear message: The State of Israel will not allow the establishment of a Palestinian state whose capital is eastern Jerusalem.” (July 26, 2017)

“… Get it into your heads that Jerusalem will remain the capital of the Jewish People for eternity; 3,000 years after King David established Jerusalem as the capital of the [Jewish] People, we returned to it.” (July 19, 2017)
