Palestinian territories observe a general strike in protest against death of a hunger-striking detainee

The Palestinian territories observed Tuesday a general strike in mourning the death of the hunger-striking Palestinian detainee Khader Adnan who died in an Israeli prison after 86 days of fasting.

The national forces declared the strike that affected all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in protest against the Israeli crime that led to the death of Adnan, 44, and held the occupation government fully responsible for his death.

Adnan, from the Jenin area, went on an open-ended hunger strike since the moment of his arrest on February 5.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, Adnan is the first prisoner to die during an individual strike. Six others have died while in prison since 1970, all during collective hunger strikes.

With the death of Adnan, a total of 236 Palestinian prisoners have died since 1967, of whom 75 died as a result of medical negligence.
