Newspapers Review: The Ukraine conflict and its repercussions highlight of the Palestinian dailies

The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today – al-Quds, al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida – dedicated most of their front-page stories to the conflict in the Ukraine and its repercussions.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the war has reached the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and said Russian President Putin has called on the army to take over control of the country.

They published developments and outcomes of the war, as well as reactions from around the world.

One story said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has called Palestine’s ambassador in Kyiv, Hashim Dajani, to check on the situation of the 2500-strong Palestinian community in Ukraine, who reportedly were all well.

Local developments at home were also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Israeli forces cracked down on the weekly anti-occupation, anti-settlements protests in the occupied West Bank causing several suffocation cases. The protests were mainly held in Beita, north of the West Bank, and Hebron, in the south.

Al-Ayyam published pictures of the protests in these two areas.

It also said that a demolition order was issued by the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem against a Palestinian-owned home in Jabal al-Mukabber neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said a protest was held in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem against Israeli attempts to forcefully evict Palestinians from their homes in order to replace them with hardcore settlers. It said Arab members of the Israeli parliament and activists took part in the protest carrying Palestinian flags and chanting slogans against the Israeli occupation.

It also said an Israeli settler opened fire and injured two Palestinian siblings from Shufat refugee camp in Jerusalem following a minor road accident on the outskirts of the city.

The daily said in a story from its Washington correspondent that the pro-Israel US lobby, AIPAC, is financing visits by dozens of US lawmakers to Israel to glorify its so-called democracy.

Coronavirus and its toll in Palestine, the region, and the world were also reported on the front page of the dailies.
