Russia appoints new deputy UN representative on Middle East peace process

Russian Foreign Ministry Thursday announced the appointment of Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vladimir Safronkov as the a special envoy for the Middle East.

The Ministry said in a statement that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov appointed Safronkov as the Special Representative of the Foreign Minister on the Middle East Peace Process.

The statement said that Safronkov, 56, will represent Russia during bilateral and multilateral contacts, including in the format of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators, working to achieve a lasting and just Palestinian-Israeli and Arab-Israeli peace.
