Abbas at the UN will recommit to a peaceful settlement, says official

President Mahmoud Abbas will recommit himself to a peaceful settlement with Israel during his meeting on Wednesday with US President Donald Trump and in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, according to Palestine’s head of delegation to Washington, Ambassador Husam Zomlot.

He told Voice of Palestine radio that the meeting will emphasize the Palestinian commitment to a political settlement on the basis of UN resolutions and the policies of the successive US administrations on the Palestinian issue, particularly ending the Israeli occupation since 1967 including in East Jerusalem.

Zomlot said President Abbas will also address the General Assembly after his meeting with Trump and will stress in his speech that any political settlement should start with ending the Israeli occupation, establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, treating the West Bank and Gaza as one unit, a just settlement to the refugee issue and US commitment to peace.

Abbas is expected to meet Trump in the afternoon and address the UN at 7:00 p.m. Jerusalem time.
