The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Wednesday issue on remarks made by Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of United Nations, in which he said that Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories are the major obstacle to peace between the Palestinians and Israel.
Guterres’ remarks came during a press conference with Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah on Tuesday.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hamdallah called on the United Nations to compel Israel to abide by the UN resolutions related to Palestine and Israel.
They said that Guterres met with families of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails during his visit to Ramallah.
Meanwhile, the three dailies focused on the provocative visit of extremist Israeli lawmakers Shuli Mualem and Yehuda Glick to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks in which he pledged to continue settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Netanyahu reportedly pledged to build 300 housing units in the illegal settlement of Beit El, north of Ramallah in the West Bank.
The two dailies said French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit the Middle East region in the spring in an effort to reinvigorate the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis.
Al-Ayyam said Israel wants to change the status of the UN headquarters in Jabal al-Mukabbir in East Jerusalem.
Al-Quds remembered the late Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali on the occasion of his 3oth death anniversary. Al-Ali was assassinated in London on July 23, 1987 and died on August 29 at a London hospital. The paper said that the British police are going to reopen investigation of his assassination.
The paper said Belgium is asking Israel to pay compensation for the destruction of property funded by its government provided to Palestinian communities in Area C of the West Bank.
It said settlers in Hebron threatened a woman with sexual assault and cursed Islam and the Prophet Mohammad.
