Newspapers review: US peace delegation’s visit to Ramallah focus of dailies

The visit of the US peace delegation headed by Trump’s son-in-law and chief advisor Jared Kushner to discuss means to resume the long-stalled peace process dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported President Mahmoud Abbas, who met the US delegation in Ramallah, stating: “We know that things are difficult and complicated, but there is nothing impossible with good efforts.”

Abbas was also reported in al-Ayyam reiterating the requirements for resuming the long-stalled peace process were “emphasizing the goal of the two-state solution and cessation of Israeli settlement construction.”

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating: “We are working with ]this delegation[ to achieve what ]US President Donald[ Trump has called a peace deal.”

President’s spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudenieh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating the visit of the US delegation’s meeting with Abbas was “constructive and positive”.

He reportedly added Abbas and the US delegation agreed to “continue dialogue with the purpose of reaching a comprehensive and historical peace deal.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported Kushner stating Trump was very optimistic and hopeful for a better future for all Palestinian people and Israeli people.

The dailies reported Israel has begun the construction work of three new settlements comprising of 11,500 units in the illegal settlement of Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem.

They added Israeli bulldozers razed Palestinian lands in Khirbet Umm al-Kheir in the southern West Bank district of Hebron to expand the nearby illegal settlement of Karmiel.

They also reported Egyptian authorities have decided to open Rafah border crossing with the besieged Gaza Strip in both directions for two days.

Al-Quds said a total of 400 Israeli Jewish settler families would “settle down” in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in ten years.

The dailies said Israeli forces detained 30 Palestinians, including former prisoners, in multiple raids across the West Bank.

Al-Quds added Israeli forces seized the sum of INS 140,000 (US$ 39,000) in West Bank raids.

It added the United Nations (UN) has allocated additional US$2.5 million in support for the besieged Gaza Strip.

It also reported Israeli Jewish settlers, including an Israeli minister and a lawmaker, attended a ceremony to place Torah scrolls in a synagogue in the predominantly Palestinian East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported the European Union (EU) called upon Israeli military to halt demolitions and confiscations of Palestinian homes and caravans set up as schools and return the confiscated equipment and structures.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli police stationed at gates to East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound continued to prevent textbooks from being delivered to three Palestinian schools located inside the walled holy site.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli police prevented Palestinian children from reaching their schools inside the mosque compound.

It added police briefly detained head of education at the Waqf Department Najeh Bkeirat and Fatah movement Jerusalem’s Secretary-General Adnan Gaith and two children at the gates.

It also reported Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi stating solving the Palestinian question would create a new reality in the Middle East.
