Israeli police detains Palestinian in Jerusalem for possession of knife

Israeli police Wednesday detained a Palestinian man outside the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem allegedly for having a knife in his possession, according to witnesses and Israeli police.

They said security guards at one of the city’s train stations stopped a young man and after searching him he was found in possession of a knife. Police immediately arrested the Palestinian, they said.

In a different development in Jerusalem, member of the Israeli parliament and extremist rabbi Yehuda Glick performed Jewish rituals outside Bab al-Qattanin, one of the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City, creating tension in the area.

This came after about 136 Jewish fanatics held provocative tour of the Muslim holy site on Wednesday.

Non-Muslims are not allowed to hold any religious rituals inside Al-Aqsa compound, which extremist Jewish groups hope to one day change that and take control of the Muslim-run site. Palestinians, nevertheless, warn of outbreak of religious strife if Israel changes the status quo at the mosque.
