Newspaper Review: Palestinian killed by Israeli forces focus of dailies

News about the Palestinian youth who was killed by Israeli forces based on claims he attempted a stab attack at a military checkpoint, hit the front pages of the three Palestinian Arabic newspapers on Sunday.

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Qutayba Zahran, 17, from the village of Illar, Tulkarm, the occupied West Bank, was shot dead at the Israeli military checkpoint of Zataara after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stab attack targeting Israeli soldiers.

The three newspapers said Palestinian, Egyptian and Jordanian foreign ministers met in Cairo, Egypt, ahead of the US delegation visit.

They agreed that Israel has to respect the historical and legal status in al-Aqsa mosque and that solving the Palestinian cause will protect the Middle East region.

Tensions in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh, Lebanon were highlighted in al-Quds and al-Ayyam. The two papers said one Palestinian was killed while several others were injured after clashes renewed between Palestinian security forces and extremist groups.

A statement by Tayeb Abdel Rahim, Secretary General of the Palestinian presidency, was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida. He said China, with its political and economic status, can be an impartial mediator in the peace process.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam reported that Fatah movement Saturday stated that convening the National Council is a national necessity, a strategic Palestinian interest, and a protection for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
