Palestine condemns Israeli inauguration of project to build 1,000 settlement units

Ramallah (IINA) – Palestinian Presidency spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh on Thursday condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s inauguration of a project to construct 1,000 housing units in the illegal settlement of Bitar Ellit, near the West Bank city of Bethlehem.
He also denounced Israel’s announcement of its intention to evict a Palestinian family in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah for the benefit of Israeli settlers, Palestinian News Agency WAFA reported.
“Settlements are basically illegal and the Israeli government has to immediately stop its destructive approach to the two-state solution,” Abu Rudeineh said in a statement. The spokesman condemned Netanyahu’s remarks in which he described the West Bank and East Jerusalem as Israeli land. He stressed that “the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip are occupied Palestinian territory and not Israeli land, as Netanyahu claimed in his remarks.”
Abu Rudeineh called on the international community, especially the United States, to immediately intervene to stop Israel’s settlement activities, which he said undermine efforts by US President Donald Trump to achieve peace in the region.
The Palestinian official added that the Israeli settlement activities increase tension that could lead to uncontrollable consequences.
