Son of former Palestine hoops standout commits to Arkansas State

HUMBLE – Kobe Wilson, son of former Palestine boys basketball standout Carlos Wilson and a point guard at Humble Atascocita, has verbally committed to Arkansas State University.

Kobe – a 6-foot-1, 175-pound point guard who was born in Palestine – was a first-team selection on the All-District 21-6A squad in the 2016-17 season as a junior. He recovered from two knee surgeries that forced him the entire 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Kobe helped the Eagles win the 21-6A title and advance to the Class 6A Region III semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Houston Cypress Falls.

Kobe chose Arkansas State over Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, Army, Illinois-Chicago and California-Riverside. Verbal commitments are non-binding. The first day Kobe can sign a National Letter of Intent is Nov. 8. Arkansas State was 20-12, 11-7 in the Sun Belt Conference in the 2016-17 season.

Carlos is a 1992 Palestine High School graduate. He was an all-district guard in the 1991-92 season, helping the Wildcats advance to the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Carlos is currently an assistant coach for Texas Southern University’s women’s basketball team, helping the Lady Tigers advance to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. He was an assistant for the Arkansas State men’s team from 2014 to 2016. He has also been an assistant at Tyler Junior College and Odessa College. He was the head coach at Humble Christian Life Center from 2006 to 2011 where he coached future NBA players DeAndre Jordan and Ben McLemore.

Kobe’s grandmother Patricia Blackshire and aunt Lenice Mims are Palestine residents.
